Gravity Storm Skydiving owner and chief instructor, Reno Jaton has more than 10,000 hrs in the air. He is a Captain in helicopters and airplanes and is ATP, CFI/II ASEL, CFI Rotorcraft Helicopter, Part 135 and Air Ambulance certified. As a seasoned instructor Reno has 1,400+ hrs of flight instruction and 1,800+ hrs of ground instruction. Reno has always had a passion for aviation. As a young boy growing up in Switzerland, he built model airplanes and dreamed of becoming a pilot. His passion for heights and adventure came naturally to him. During childhood Reno realized he loved the physical and mental challenges of sports and pursued ice hockey and European motocross with a fervor.
After high school Reno’s childhood dreams of becoming a pilot were derailed when he was unable to afford the overpriced European flight schools. Following his family’s wishes, Reno chose a more conventional path and earned his degree in electrical engineering in Switzerland. It was there that Reno fell in love with skydiving and went on to earn the highest skydiving license in Europe.
While working as an electrical engineer Reno was unable to stop fantasizing about something more adventurous. One evening while practicing his motocross stunts, Reno realized that he could combine his motocross experience and his knowledge of electrical engineering to make his stunts more entertaining and safe. Reno knew he had to follow his passion and began developing and performing daring stunts in a controlled and calculated manner. Reno’s talent and ingenuity for safety quickly made him well known in the entertainment industry. He spent over two decades working all over the world as a professional stuntman, performing well over 400 stunts in movies and organizing and performing in a super bike stunt show. Reno holds six world records on motorcycle and jet cars.
After touring the USA with his super bike stunt show for a number of years, he and his young family wanted to settle down so his son could start school. Reno knew this was his opportunity to pursue his dreams of becoming a pilot. In 2002, Reno enrolled in a local pilot training course and finally achieved his dreams by earning his pilot license. As the need for helicopter pilots in the Gulf of Mexico was high, he quickly earned his helicopter pilot license and began his career flying personnel and equipment back and forth to the oil platforms. It was there Reno became IFR Captain on twin turbine helicopters.
Over the years Reno has flown in a wide variety of missions including numerous search and rescue (SAR) missions in the Gulf of Mexico, an environment known for its erratic and rapidly changing weather. He has mastered how to stay calm under pressure, mitigate risks, follow check lists, and be prepared at all times.
With nearly 20 years of flight experience Reno began to dream about sharing his passion for flying with others. He knew his years of real world pilot experience and stunt work would make a difference in the classroom and in the air. He believes in teaching students to fly with confidence by getting them in the air as often as possible, following checklists and safety protocols without fail, preparing for stressful situations, and encouraging students to constantly learn and develop their skills. With his determination, the unwavering help of his family and the County Commissioner, Gravity Storm Skydiving & Tex Air America were born.
